This will instruct the web browser about the version of the markup language your document is written in, so that the browser can render its content accurately.
What Is A <!DOCTYPE> Declaration (DTD).
The doctype declaration, meaning a Document Type Definition (DTD), defines the rules for the markup language.
Below are Doctypes present in the W3C Recommendations, and their descriptions.
You may copy and use in your document, depending on the type of document you'll prefer to write.
Read carefully, and make sure to use them correspondingly so as to be able to create the right document that browsers can render correctly.

Using this DTD your document can contain all HTML elements and attributes. Presentational or deprecated elements like font, and Framesets are not allowed.

HTML 4.01 Transitional.

HTML 4.01 Frameset.

XHTML 1.0 Strict.

XHTML 1.1.
