How to renew your Ghana passport abroad
Apply online, attend one appointment, receive your passport by post. Documents, fees and timings for Ghanaians in the UK, Germany and beyond.
Last updated: 19 October 2026
Your Ghana passport is about to expire, or already has? You don't need to fly home. Ghanaians in Germany, the UK and elsewhere apply online and then attend one short appointment at their Ghana Embassy or High Commission. Here is how the process works.
Before you start
- Get your Ghana Card number. Reporting in April 2026 says the Ghana Card is now a mandatory requirement for first-time adult passport applicants abroad, and passport applications increasingly ask for it. If you don't have one, see our guide How to get your Ghana Card from abroad.
- Find your mission. In the UK that is the Ghana High Commission in London; in Germany, the Embassy of Ghana in Berlin. Other countries have their own Embassy or High Commission.
- Start early. Allow at least two months before you need to travel.
Step-by-step: renewing your Ghana passport abroad
- Apply online. Create an account on the Ghana Passport Online Portal (passport.mfa.gov.gh) with an email address and phone number you can verify, then fill in the application.
- Upload a digital photo (white background) and your supporting documents as the portal asks.
- Pay online by debit or credit card. Fees are non-refundable, and missions don't accept cash.
- Book a biometric appointment at your Embassy or High Commission (or a visa centre where your mission uses one).
- Attend in person with your original documents. Your fingerprints and a new photo are taken, and your documents are checked.
- Receive your passport by post. Missions increasingly send passports back by post instead of in-person collection. Bring a self-addressed, prepaid, tracked return envelope (in the UK, for example, Royal Mail Special Delivery) or follow your mission's postage instructions.
Documents to bring to your appointment
- Your current or expired Ghana passport
- Your Ghana Card (or Ghana Card number)
- The application printout and payment confirmation from the portal
- Original supporting ID, such as your residence permit, driving licence or another ID card
- Your birth certificate, especially if your details have changed or you are applying for the first time
- For a change of name (for example after marriage): your marriage certificate or deed poll
- Your prepaid return envelope, if your mission posts passports back
Some missions ask for guarantors or a witness for certain applications. Read the instructions on the portal carefully and bring everything it lists, in the original.
Fees and processing time
Fees depend on the country you apply from and the type of passport. Figures reported in April 2026 for a standard application:
| Applying from | Reported fee (standard) |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £110 |
| Germany | €200 |
| United States | $130 (plus a visa-centre fee where one is used) |
These are reported figures, not an official price list. The portal shows the exact amount before you pay. Expect around 6 to 8 weeks after your biometric appointment before your new passport arrives.
Lost, stolen or damaged passport
Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport costs more than a normal renewal and needs extra documents, typically:
- a police report from the country where the passport was lost or stolen,
- a sworn affidavit explaining what happened, and
- your original birth certificate, authenticated by Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A damaged passport should be brought to the appointment.
Tips to avoid delays
- Make names match exactly across your passport, Ghana Card and birth certificate. A different spelling or order is the most common cause of delays.
- Use only the official portal. Be careful with agents on social media who promise a "fast-track" passport for extra money.
- Children: a parent or guardian applies with the child and brings the child's birth certificate and the parents' IDs. Ask your mission about consent forms.
- If the mission website shows no details, call or email the Embassy or High Commission before travelling to an appointment.
- Dual citizens can hold a Ghana passport too. See our guide Ghana dual citizenship explained.
