How to get your Ghana Card from abroad
Register for Ghana's national ID without flying home. Documents, fees and the step-by-step process for Ghanaians in the diaspora.

The Ghana Card is Ghana's national ID card, issued by the National Identification Authority (NIA). More and more services now ask for it: banks, SIM registration, the Ghana Revenue Authority, SSNIT, passport applications and many government services. The good news is that Ghanaians living abroad can register without travelling home.
Who can register abroad?
According to the NIA, all Ghanaian citizens of any age (from 0 years) living outside Ghana can register. This includes Ghanaians by birth, by descent, by registration and by naturalisation — including dual citizens.
Documents you need
You need one of these original documents to prove Ghanaian citizenship:
- A birth certificate issued by Ghana's Births and Deaths Registry, or
- A valid Ghana passport, or
- A Certificate of Naturalisation or Registration (for people who acquired Ghanaian citizenship), or
- An Oath of Identity form completed through the vouching process.
For vouching, the NIA lists who can vouch for you — for example a professional teacher, chief, magistrate or judge, licensed professional, civil servant, clergy or imam, member of the security services, or a current or former Member of Parliament. Other government-issued IDs are helpful but optional.
Step-by-step: getting your Ghana Card from abroad
- Apply online. Fill in the application and pay the fee on the NIA registration portal (register.nia.gov.gh).
- Application review. An NIA officer reviews your application — this may include a short virtual interview.
- Book and attend your biometric appointment at a participating Ghana Mission (Embassy, High Commission or Consulate). Bring your original documents and the QR code from your application.
- Biometric capture. Your fingerprints, iris scans, photo and signature are taken.
- Collect your card. Where printing is available at the mission, the card may be issued on the same day.

The NIA publishes these first-time registration fees for Ghanaians living outside Ghana (payable in the local-currency equivalent):

Tips to avoid delays
- Make names match. Use exactly the same spelling and order of names as on your birth certificate or passport.
- Bring originals, not just copies, to your appointment.
- Children: a parent or guardian should come along with the child's Ghanaian birth certificate or passport.
- Only pay on official channels. Be careful of agents on social media who promise a “fast-track” card.

Can I get a Ghana Card if I live abroad?
Yes. The NIA registers Ghanaian citizens of all ages who live outside Ghana. You apply online, then attend a biometric appointment at a participating Ghana Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.
How much does the Ghana Card cost abroad?
For first-time registration the NIA lists USD 55 in ECOWAS countries, USD 75 in the rest of Africa and USD 115 in the rest of the world, payable in the local-currency equivalent. Always check the NIA website for current fees.
Can dual citizens get a Ghana Card?
Yes. Ghanaians who also hold another citizenship are still Ghanaian citizens and can register.
What if I don't have a Ghanaian birth certificate or passport?
You can use the vouching process: a qualified person, such as a licensed professional, civil servant, clergy member or chief, vouches for your identity with an Oath of Identity form.
