Last updated: 19 October 2026
School fees, a parent's medicine, a family funeral, a building project back home: sending money to Ghana is something most of us do every month. Today you can send from Germany or the UK straight to a mobile money wallet or bank account in Ghana in minutes, from your phone. This guide explains how it works, what to compare and how to stay safe.
Ways to send money to Ghana
| Method | How your family receives it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Money transfer app | Mobile money wallet (MTN, Telecel, AirtelTigo) or bank account | Usually the fastest and cheapest. You pay with your debit card. |
| Bank transfer | Ghanaian bank account | Often slower, with higher fees and a weaker exchange rate. |
| Cash pick-up | Cash at an agent location | Useful if the recipient has no wallet or account, but they have to travel to collect it. |
Most Ghanaians now receive money on mobile money: it arrives on their phone and can be spent, withdrawn at an agent or moved to a bank account.
What to compare before you send
- The amount your recipient gets in cedis. This is the number that matters. A "no fee" offer with a weak exchange rate can cost more than a small fee with a good rate.
- Speed. Mobile money transfers through apps often arrive within minutes; bank transfers can take longer.
- Limits. Apps have limits per transfer and per month, and may ask for documents for larger amounts.
- Regulation. Use a provider that is licensed where you live, for example by the FCA in the UK or an EU financial regulator if you send from Germany.
- The recipient's details. The name on the mobile money wallet should match the name you enter.
Our pick: Taptap Send
Taptap Send is a money transfer app built for sending money to Africa. According to Taptap Send:
- Where you can send from: the UK, the EU (including Germany), the US, Australia, Canada and the UAE.
- How your family receives it: MTN Mobile Money, AirtelTigo, Telecel (formerly Vodafone Cash) or any Ghanaian bank account.
- Fees: no transfer fee for sending to Ghana. Like every provider, it earns money on the exchange rate, and the app shows exactly how many cedis your recipient will get before you send.
- Speed: Taptap Send says 96% of its transfers are received in under a minute.
- Limits per transfer: up to GHS 15,000 to mobile money and GHS 30,000 to a bank account.
- Paying: with a Visa or Mastercard debit card in your own name.
How to use the code
- Download Taptap Send from the App Store or Google Play and create your account.
- Start your first transfer and enter the amount.
- Tap "Have a referral code?" and enter WILLIAM1288.
- Finish the transfer. The code only works if you add it before your first transfer; it can't be added afterwards. A minimum amount may apply, and the app shows the current bonus.
Staying safe
- Only send to people you know. Be careful with "investment", romance or "urgent help" requests from people you have only met online.
- Double-check the number and name before you confirm. A wrong mobile money number is hard to reverse.
- Never share your app login, card details or one-time codes with anyone, even someone who says they work for the provider.
- Use the official app from the App Store or Google Play, not links sent to you on WhatsApp.
- Keep your receipts for larger amounts, for example for school fees or building work.
